Traditional Crafts from Orava
Wood craft
The Orava region was always rich in woods, where from the wood was
outputted and later cultivated in different ways. The most developed
was the production of shingles and planks/boards. With wood were
also connected crafts such as carpentry (carpenters worked with
big pieces of wood and built wooden houses or bridges), joinery,
or wheelwrighting (wheelwrights made mainly wheels for carts and
carriages).
Iron production
The blacksmiths were mainly concentrated in the village of Zazriva
together with bell makers. Here were made small bells for sheep,
but also big tower and church bells. The local balcksmith also knew
how to make handles, guns and cartridge shells.
