Traditional Crafts from Orava
Different crafts included:
Weavery
As the main job it was mostly developed in the upper Orava region,
mainly in the village Klin, Bobrov, Zubrohlava, Stefanov, Tvrdosin,
Vavrecka and others. Together with these craft also the craft of
well known Orava linens was developed, which in the C19th was well
known in the whole of the Europe. Orava linen makers were famous
selling their products in Balkan, Turkey, Egypt and also in Palastine.
With the production of linen were also closely connected the mangle,
dye and pattern houses. The tailoring was also very much spread
throughtout the region.
Cloth and boot making
The cloth was made from sheep wool and mainly for a person's own
need. In the village of Habovke though they weaved the cloth also
for sale. On the other hand various boots were made from an animal
skin. These were mainly designed for the higher social classes and
the poorer classes wore more simple boots, which in winter were
staffed with cloth supports.
