Traditional Crafts from Orava
In Orava, mainly because of the unfavourable economic situation,
more of the homemade folk production was developed, such as the
guild craft. The poverty forced people to make their own clothes,
shoes, different working tools and other objects of everyday use.
At the beginning they only made these for their own need, but later
also for the local market and further places, where there was the
demand for these products.
Later, with the foundation of first towns in Orava, starts also
the development of crafts. These were slowly moving from the village
to the towns where there were better conditions for their existance.
The character of the folk production was mainly influenced by the
availability of the materials. In the Orava region it was mainly
the stone, wood, from the cultivation plants the flax and hemp,
as well as the products gained from animals, such as cheese and
wool.
