Traditional folk costume from Orava
The Orava folk costume was simple, practical and made of materials
such as linen, cloth and fur. There was not any sagnificat developments
in patterns of the costume. The only one expressive part of the
female costume was a bonnet. In the lower Orava region the bonnet
was typical for its wide embroided or laced band. The Orava costume
doesn't have many varations. The exception is the goralsky costume,
which was worn by people of the upper Orava goral villages, such
as Novot, Mutne, Oravska Lesna, Zakamenne, or Sucha Hora.
This costume was typical for its embroided fur coat and hat decorated
with little shells and with hawk's or eagle's feather. The female
costume was characteristic for its skirt and blouse with big flower
ornaments.
The costumes in the villages around Dolny Kubin area were typical
for its female white bonnet, called ketis. The male part of the
costumes typical for its cloth trousers with green lacing and for
its various types of three quarter length coats also made from cloth,
which were also decorated with green or red lacing. Typical part
of male costume was a hat, called oravka, lined and edged with fur.
The villages of Vysny Kubin, Medzihradne, Lestiny, Jasenova were
in the past occupied by higher classes and therefore more expensive
materials were used for making costumes. Even for this fact their
costumes were very similar to the ones typical for the lower Orava
region.
