The Witches' Days - St. Ondrej
The next in the series of the witches' days was St. Ondrej's (30th
of November). This day was especially for the girls, who got up
to mischief, played practical jokes and had parties.
This day was also full of different prophecies about getting married.
The girls would go around the houses of their boyfriends stealing
wood, which they would afterwards use for heating the stoves on
which they would cook dumplings.
Each girl cooked her dumplings in a separate pot, and in each of
the dumplings was placed a little note with a boy's name written
on it. Whichever dumpling first floated to the top of the pot was
the decisive one, and the girl was supposed to marry the boy whose
name was hidden in that dumpling.
One of the superstitious practices on this day was the pouring
of the lead. This involved the girls pouring molten lead into cold
water, and from the shapes that the solid lead formed they would
predict their future, or the job of their future husband.
