Dolny Kubin (1918 - 1945)

After the rise of the First Czechoslovak Republic, a national council was set up in Dolny Kubin. However, not even that helped the social and economic situation in Orava, which was still one of the poorest regions in the country.

During the 1940's Dolny Kubin was affected by extremely tough winters. The picture shows the icebergs on the river Orava, with the old railway bridge in the background.

In the town, new industrial enterprises were founded and tradesmen and craftsmen created several unions. One of the important enterprises was the Orava industry, which created the bakery production.

A water-supply started to be built, the square was paved, telephones installed and also the petroleum lighting on the streets was replaced by electric lighting. However, despite these improvements, the work opportunities were missing, which slowed down the development of the whole region.
