The First Reference of Dolny Kubin
The name Kubin is mentioned for the first time in 1325 in a document,
which acknowledged the gaining of the Vysny Kubin settlement.
A more concerete mention of the name Dolny Kubin though came later
in 1381. It was then mentioned in connection with a boundary dispute,
which arose between the landowners of Vysny Kubin and Dolny Kubin.
Dolny Kubin, up until the end of feudalism, was a property of Orava
castle. In the second half of the 16th century, Orava castle was
owned by the infamous Thurzo family.
During this period most of the population of Dolny Kubin had been
permanently tied with working on the land, and thus did not have
any rights concerning freedom of movement.
