Kukucin, Martin (real name Matej Bencur)
Born: 17/05/1860 Jasenova, Dolny Kubin region
Died: 21/05/1928 Pakrac, South America
Martin Kukucin was born in the village of Jasenova, part of Dolny
Kubin, and is known as the Slovak realism writer. Most of his life
he spent as a doctor in South America, but never lost touch with
his mother country.
Kukucin's works can be divided into many groups such as the beginnings:
"Co kumu sudene, Zivot-lubost, Falosnost, Maje, etc...",
the realistic sketches from the village life: "Dedinsky jarmok,
Na Ondreja, Hody, etc...", the mature times: "Rysava jalovica,
Neprebudeny, Velkou lyzicou, etc...", the comics: "Pred
skuskou, Na obecnom salasi, etc...", the student years: novel
"Mlade leta", the teaching years: "Vianocne oblatky",
tales: "Koniec a zaciatok and Dies iare, etc...
Kukucin's work was very wide ranging, including stories, novels,
social novels, travel sketches, plays and translations, and his
writing belongs to some of the most important in Slovak literature.
