Matuska, Janko
Born: 10/01/1821 Dolny Kubin
Died: 11/01/1877 Dolny Kubin
Janko Matuska was born in Dolny Kubin and studied in Gemer and
in Bratislava.
When in 1844, Ludovit Stur was suspended from the board of professors,
young Matuska also left Bratislava in protest. His protest was also
present in his poem "Nad Tatrou sa blyska" (Lightning
over the Tatras), which played an important part in Slovak national
life and later became the slovak part of the Czechoslovak National
Anthem. It is of course today the Slovak National Anthem.
Matuska wrote patriotic poems and verse, and when in 1844 the literary
Slovak language became formalized, he presented his lyrical poems
and ballads in the Nitra Almanac.
In 1848-49 Janko Matuska finished his literary activity, and returned
to his home town, Dolny Kubin, where he died in 1877.
