Hattala, Martin

Born: 04/11/1821 Trstena, Dolny Kubin region
Died: 11/12/1903 Prague

Martin Hattala was born in 1821, in Trstena, part of Dolny Kubin, and became famous thanks to his codification of the Slovak language.

Hattala was a very good linguist and since the year 1850 became a professor of the grammar schools in Bratislava, where two years later he also published his "Kratku mluvnicu slovensku" (Short book of rules of the Slovak language). Its orthography system is valid till the present day.

Hattala was invited to Prague because of his knowledge of the Slovak language, where in 1861 he became a proper University professor.

Hattala's codification of the Slovak language played a big part in settling the literary Slovak language in the mid 19th century.
