Maria Medvecka, born in Dolny Kubin, became famous as an academic
painter and national artist. After her final exams in Kosice, she
studied at the Pedagogic Academy in Bratislava and became a teacher
in Zubrohlava, Tvrdosin, Jablonka and Namestovo.
The beauties of the country, folk architecture, but mainly the
figures and faces of people, filled her sketches. After the war
she carried on studying at the Art Academy in Vienna and Prague.
From 1950, Medvecka worked in Orava. She painted scenes of Orava
people and the big social changes of Orava until the liberation
years. She was very familiar with the life of Orava people and practically
became the painter of Orava.
Medvecka presented her works at art exhibitions home and abroad,
and in 1949 organized exhibitions in many towns and companies in
Slovakia. In 1961, she also exhibited her work in Berlin.
Medvecka is a representative of Slovak realism art, in the 20th
century.
