Florin, Theo (real name Teodor Herkel)

Theo H. Florin was born in Dolny Kubin in 1908, the son of a shoe
maker.
He studied in his home town and already as a student began to write
and publish work in various Slovak magazines and newspapers. In
1932, he went abroad for a long time. First he lived in former Yugoslavia,
then in Paris, where he became a secretary of the Czechoslovak colony
and an editor of Slovak newspapers. Florin also published his first
poetical collections here.
In 1940, he went to London, and after the war he worked in the
diplomatic service, first at the Embassy in Paris, then in Washington.
In 1948 Florin became a personal secretary of the Foreign minister,
Vladimir Clementis.
In 1950-53, he was imprisoned illegally. After he was freed he
settled in Dolny Kubin and became a shop-assistant in a bookshop.
Here, he devoted his time to writing, adult education and actively
took part in organizing Hviezdoslavov Kubin, a festival of artistic
recitals of poems and prose, which is still active today.
