History of Orava Castle
Orava Castle is first mentioned in the year 1267, when the owners
at that time, the Balasa family of Zvolen, gave it to King Belo
IV as a present
|
|
In 1298, the castle became
the property of the infamous Slovak landowner, Matus Cak. For
the next 250 years the castle changed possesion many times,
until it became the property of the Thurzo family, in 1556,
who totally re-built and re-fortified the castle.
At the end of the 19th Century, the castle underwent a further
major reconstruction, where the Middle Castle was restored
in the Gothic style.

 |
|
| Following WWII, the
castle underwent another facelift so that it would be a suitable
environment to house the All Orava Natural History Museum.
Today, many of the exhibits help retell the castle's history
with the interesting legends associated with them. For example,
the ladies may wish to gaze in the mirror that supposedly
makes them more beautiful. Beware though, as the legend says
that if you then look in any other mirror you will become
ugly!
