Amateur Theater in Orava
Some of the actors and actresses came from families living in Dolny
Kubin. For example, from the family Bruckovci, Novakovci, Bullovci,
Bencurovci, Rutkajovci, Medzihradskovci, Nadasiovci, later Knazovicovci,
Tatliakovci, Stykovci and others.
The performances took place mostly in the big courtyard of the
Tyroler's Hotel (today the building holds the Youth Center, just
off the main square). On 15th of May 1919, the Mestianska beseda
was renamed to the Hviezdoslav beseda and its drama branch had its
permanent stage and changing rooms in the Hotel Slavia (today the
building houses the restaurant Lucia).
The theater activity in Dolny Kubin was also enriched by the foundation
of Cultural Military Branches in the local troops of the second
and third mountain banner, whose members contributed in a big way
to the growth of the cultural and theatrical activity in the town.
Operas and musical comedies were accompanied by the military orchestra.
During this period plays such as Lucerna from Alojz Jirasek, Moj
Jozko from Terezia Vansova, Zensky zakon from J.G. Tajovsky, Ujo
Vana from I. P. Cechova, Herodes and Herodias from P.O. Hviezdoslav
and many others were performed.
