Amateur Theater in Orava
The beginning of the amateur theater in Slovakia goes back to the
first half of the C19th. Leopold Bruck is considered to be the co-founder
of the amateur theater class in Dolny Kubin.
In 1842, in Dolny Kubin, there was the first ever performance in
Slovak, called Cech a Nemec" (Czech and German) from
the author Stepanek.
In the 1860s, there was already a busy theater life in Dolny Kubin.
After the death of Leopold Bruck a new teacher, Adolf Medzihradsky,
took over and organized theatrical performances together with his
students.
In 1868, the cultural union, Mestianska beseda, was founded. Within
this union a drama class was also successfully developing its activity.
The manager of the theater and entertainment was P.O. Hviezdoslav.
Plays such as Laska zdola vsetko (The Love overcomes everything),
or Skrotena divoska from Shakespeare (Taming of the Shrew), as well
as the works of Ferka Urbanka were performed.
