Literature in Orava
Literature greats from the region include:
Pavol Cancrini - An enlightened intellectual, who translated
a famous work about chicken-pox and small-pox. His other well known
work in print is the book called Nabozne Kazani.
Jan Bruck - He wrote latin-slovak poems, and his work was
then continued by his son Leopold Bruck. He collected folk stories
and traditions from the Orava region and devoted much of his time
to his students, who he taught how to recite poetry.
Jozef Bencur - He was a famour writer, who was also a chancellor
during the reign of Jozef II, as well as being the Emperor's librarian.
Janko Matuska - He wrote and recited his own poems. He was
mainly interested in historical and country themes. He is also the
author of the Slovak national anthem Nad Tatrou sa blyska (Lightning
over the Tatras). Matuska also wrote a play called Siroty (Orphans)
and the famous tale from C14th called Zhoda liptovska.
