Natural Conditions
The district of Dolny Kubin, together with the districts of Tvrdosin
and Namestovo, forms the region of Orava. Not many regions in Slovakia
have such a well preserved, rich and varied nature as Orava. A rich
geological past has resulted in many specific kinds of flora and
fauna, and natural beauties for such a small area.
The district of Dolny Kubin is also an area where four protected
areas intervene: the National Park: Mala Fatra, the protected area
of Velka Fatra, with also a small part of the protected area of
Upper Orava and the protected area of Kysuce.
54.3% of the area of Orava, is formed by forest and highland meadows.
The most predominant are pine forests (e.g. fir, spruce and pine
trees), followed by the woods (e.g. oak, beech, maple, lime, silver
birch trees and others).
In this area, a lot of different kinds of birds nest here, such
as patridges, skylarks, hawks, kestrels and others. The forests
are homes to a lot of reindeers and deers, brown bears, wild boars,
foxes, badgers, wild cats and small rodents, and the river Orava
also creates a good conditions for various types of fish and water
birds. Peat-bogs are home to many rare types of reptiles and amphibians.
