Geography
Dolny Kubin is situated in the northwestern part of Slovakia and
belongs to the Zilina county. It is one of the districts of the
Orava region. With an area of 490 square kilometers, the district
of Dolny Kubin takes up 29.6% of the Orava region, 7.2% of the Zilina
county, and 1% of the territory of Slovakia.
At the northwestern side, the district of Dolny Kubin has the mountain
range of Oravska Magura as its border, which is in fact the natural
border between the districts of Dolny Kubin, Namestovo and Tvrdosin.
The western border is formed by the National Park of Mala Fatra
and CHKO Kysuce, to the south the mountain range of Chocske vrchy
is situated as well as a part of CHKO Velka Fatra. The eastern border
is made up of the Skorusinske hills.
The district of Dolny Kubin is mountainous in character. The water
pivot of its territory is the river Orava, which concentrates the
waters of the whole of the region, and by the village of Kralovany
runs into the Vah, the longest river in Slovakia.
The geographical position of Dolny Kubin is important because of
the border with Poland, and also because the town connects strong
economic centres, such as Zilina - Martin - Ruzomberok - Liptovsky
Mikulas.
